Meet Mary

Learn more about Mary and how she came to be a Credit Counselor, a QuickBooks Trainer and a Small Business Coach.

Hello There

What was your first job out of college and how did you land it?

I was an office manager for a mortgage company. Let me start off by telling you that I'm naturally organized, one day I took the initiative to start cleaning someone's desk/office and they were surprised at how organized I left it.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in credit counseling, Bookkeeping, and business counseling?

Credit counseling:

When the economy crashed in 2008 I was a real estate agent, and I had to change careers. I made a list of all the things I was good at and my favorite thing was credit counseling. Not to mention my sister had previously worked for a credit counseling organization and was kind enough to introduced me to the manager over the phone.

Bookkeeping:

I was personally trained by a professional bookkeeper in 2003, Karla taught me how to manage QuickBooks. I always thought bookkeeping was a-OK. Throughout the years QuickBooks kept coming back into my life. In 2018 I realized the need for QuickBooks and I accepted the idea to help small businesses.

Business Counseling:

I was Introduced to the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and SCORE in 2003. I attended many of their workshops and I thought it was the most exciting thing ever being that I love learning. And I told myself someone day I just have to be a business advisor and here I am.

Walk us through a typical day in your life

I check my appointments at night, if I have an early appointment the next day I make sure to go to sleep early.

I wake up exactly at sunrise and open all the blinds, make coffee, do the bed, answer any urgent emails, ask Alexa for the weather to know what to wear. Go to my home office, I usually research anything that pops into my mind (to avoid mental distractions in the day). I make a list of things to do and when I feel organized for the day I go have a light breakfast. I then attend my appointments and organize my files. I try to do at least one thing a day for my business, whether it's to create a new form or update my website. 2 PM comes around and I start planning dinner since my husband get's off of work early. I make an early dinner and half the time I go back to work. The rest of the day I usually spend my time reading the Bible or researching information for clients.

*I still need to learn to make time to workout-

What is somthing unexpected that you have learned and/or gained form working in this field?

I didn't realize how many businesses need help with QuickBooks nor how many Hispanics need help with their business overall.

What evergizes you about your industry?

I love to see people grow.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Stay in college you can do it! And start your business as soon as you can.

What's the best advice (carrer or personal) that you've ever received?

Listen to your gut more than people, people are imperfect and they don't know your goals.

What accomplishment (Personal or Professional) are you most proud of?

I had the privilege to represent my college class in 2003. I was valedictorian without even trying, my focus was to learn as much as I could, not to be the top of my class.

How do you define success?

Success to me is not to be wealthy but to have time to do all the things that important to you.

To be 80 years old and to be proud of the story you have to share.

What's next for you and your career?

I want to share my knowledge with others and contribute to their success. My dream is to have a YouTube channel and to post at least one video a week about work/life balance, and how to start a business.

Quick Fire Questions

Ideal Sunday:

To have my Bible study, have a delicious lunch and/or dinner, and call/Zoom my family.

Go-to Starbucks order:

Tall Hot Chocolate, with coconut or soy milk at 130 degrees.

(sugar is not good for you, I just want to get over the craving).

If you could have lunch with any woman, who would it be and why?

I love spending time with my mom and my mother-in-law. They have what I want, a long marriage of over 50 years, great cooks, a beautiful family, and are hard workers, not to mention a great love for God, huge hearts, and are full of beauty.
